Dating back thousands of years, mead is an alcoholic drink created by fermenting honey. It was once thought to be the drink of the gods and is widely associated with the Viking culture.
Early Filipinos, according to records, also have our own fermented honey alcoholic drinks. The Philippines have Bais, which is a traditional mead from the Mandaya and Dibabawon Manobo of northeastern Mindanao island in the southern part of the archipelago. Additionally, there is the Kabawaran drink from the Visayas region made from honey and paste from the kabarawan tree (Neolitsea villosa).
La Mesa Mead is our brand of alcoholic mead. We have traditional, pineapple, and coffee variants. Coffeexmead is our line of low ABV and non-alcoholic mead-based beverages. All brewed nearby La Mesa Watershed, the last remaining rainforest of its size in Metro Manila.
There’s no rule in drinking mead. Room temp, chilled, on the rocks, as a cocktail? It’s all okay, just drink it how you want it enjoyed. You can also make use of any glassware or even the traditional mead-horns from the Viking culture.
One thing for sure, you drink mead to celebrate! Mead is a happy and festive drink.
